Dr. Kamal

Professor (Department of Earth Science)

Dr. Kamal is a Professor of Earth Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IITR) and has vast Academic/Research/Industrial/Administrative experience of 33 years in the field of Geophysical Studies. After obtaining his Masters's and Doctoral degrees from IITR and Western University Canada, he has served many organizations like Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited (MECL), National Institute of Hydrology (NIH), All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG) before joining IIT Roorkee. He specializes in Earthquake Studies and Digital Signal Processing and his passion is Fractal Dynamics of Natural Systems.

He has been associated with the development of India’s first Earthquake Early Warning System (EEWS) in Uttarakhand since its inception, first in a supervisory role on behalf of DST, Govt. of India and as the Project Lead since 2019. The performance of Uttarakhand’s EEWS took a quantum jump during his leadership. He was instrumental in designing a Mobile Application for early warning of earthquakes to the general public that was christened as BhuDEV (Bhukamp Disaster Early Vigilanté).
